Comet Academy compared with YouTube and free tutorials
Everything here is free somewhere. That was never the problem.
Every technical thing this course covers is explained free somewhere online, often by someone better at explaining it than any single instructor. The documentation is free. The models have free tiers. The example code is public.
People do teach themselves this way and become very good. It is the most common path into building things, and it costs nothing but time.
Pick YouTube and free tutorials if…
- You have taught yourself something hard before and finished it. You already know you can.
- You have plenty of time and no money. That trade is completely reasonable, and time is the cheaper currency at sixteen.
- You enjoy the wandering. Some people learn best by following curiosity with no deadline at all.
- You are only exploring, and you do not yet know whether you like this.
Pick us if…
- You have a folder of half-finished projects. The tutorials were not the missing piece.
- You get stuck at eleven at night and there is nobody to ask, so the project quietly dies.
- You cannot tell which of forty tutorials is the current one, and half are three years out of date.
- You want a fixed end date, because open-ended has not worked for you before.
Side by side.
| YouTube and free tutorials | Comet Academy | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free | $950, once |
| What is scarce | Your attention and your follow-through | Three weeks of your evenings |
| When you are stuck | Search, guess, or give up | Ask in the live class or at open help |
| Finishing rate | Entirely down to you | A deadline, three checkpoints and a demo day |
| Currency of the material | Mixed. A lot of it is out of date | Written for the tools as they are this year |
The short answer
If free tutorials were going to work for you, they probably already would have. What this costs money for is not the information. It is the deadline, the person checking, and the group finishing at the same time as you. If you have finished things alone before, keep your money.
